One of our main responsibilities is to educate people about their human rights under the Act. We believe that education is key to eliminating barriers and preventing discrimination from happening in the first place. Individuals, businesses, and organizations are welcome to call the Commission if they have questions about their human rights, their responsibilities under the Act, or to book an education session.
Enforcing the Act
The Commission staff are responsible for reviewing complaints of discrimination. When a complaint is filed, we help parties attempt to resolve their dispute through mediation and settlement discussions. If not resolved at an early stage, we investigate to determine whether the allegation has merit. In some cases it is necessary to hold a public hearing to determine whether the complaint of discrimination has been established.
Advising Government
The Commission advises the government on suggestions and recommendations made by private organizations and individuals regarding human rights in the province.
